The "new" Doctor Who

Postby Damonii » Sun Apr 04, 2010 10:59 am

What are peoples opinions of this season 5 episode one "doctor who"

WARNING MY OPINION CONTAINS SPOILERS

To start off I will say WTF this new doctor makes me want to hurt him whenever he does a stupid facial expression. Also why in gods name would they make the sonic screwdriver green *facepalm* and that stupid stop motion camera thing they did while the doctor "deduced" things is god awful. The new tardis looks horrible and I have no idea what kind of an audience that is trying to bring in its kind of like fail steampunk if it had been awesome steampunk i would greatly approve but not that dodgy crap.

In summary
New Doctor = Crap
New TARDIS = CRAP!
New Sonic Screwdriver = Crap
The director playing around with funky visual effects that just annoy me = CRAP
New outfit = Crap (seriously a bow tie?)
New companion = EPIC WIN

I am a doctor who fan thus I would have watched it even if it made me want to slit my wrists but now I can watch it and hate all the other crap because the companion is so awesome. I really really like girls like that and she is perfect...

I liked it overall - I liked that the episode was set in some random village just like the classic Jon Pertwee/Tom Baker era particularly. The stop motion thing didn't fit and was completely unnecessary, though. And that whole "I'm the Doctor" scene at the end was too corny, or hammy, or whatever. I can see what they tried to do - it was trying to put him in a different contrast to the Tenth Doctor - but...well, I can't complain too much. It's a kids show.

The new TARDIS looks too much like the old one. I struggled to spot the difference during the first panoramic shot there. The console looked stupid though. It also defies belief that the TARDIS can generate sonic screwdrivers - while I could go into lots of nerdy details over that, I'll just say if it could do that, it could do a lot more.

New companion is too much like a younger Donna. It's like they just made her younger. A few changes here and there, but I really hope they go somewhere decent with it.

Oh well, guess I'll be back for more next week!

1. Give him some time - just after regenerations the Doctor is usually a bit weird and over-the-top-adjusting.
2. Remember David Tennant? That funny, tall, skinny guy who made odd facial expressions all the time? Yeah...

Also why in gods name would they make the sonic screwdriver green *facepalm*

The sonic screwdriver has changed colour multiple times over the series. For the longest time it was, in fact, red. I really can't believe people are making such a big deal about this tiny fact...

and that stupid stop motion camera thing they did while the doctor "deduced" things is god awful.

Yeah it was a bit odd. I have a feeling it's not going to be repeated.

The new tardis looks horrible and I have no idea what kind of an audience that is trying to bring in its kind of like fail steampunk if it had been awesome steampunk i would greatly approve but not that dodgy crap.

The new TARDIS is actually really sleek looking. Check out io9 or "Doctor Who Online" for some excellent pictures of it. From what I've heard* you don't get a good look at it in the episode. To me it looks like the TARDIS has finally grown up - the coral was very unrefined and this has a lot of similarities but is a little bit sexier.

*Because, you know, having seen it in Australia would involve some kind of illegal downloads which wonderful people such as myself would never do...

ETA:

The console looked stupid though.

More stupid than the old one which was just a big mess of stuff?

It also defies belief that the TARDIS can generate sonic screwdrivers - while I could go into lots of nerdy details over that, I'll just say if it could do that, it could do a lot more.

Watch Smith and Jones from Series 3 again. The Doctor blows up his screwdriver in that and ends up getting a new one from the TARDIS. It's been really heavily implied in the new series (even explicitly stated, I believe) that the TARDIS is more organic than it is just a 'machine'. It's pretty smart.

I thought it was pretty implied in the Tennant series that the Tardis is pretty much sentient, and for it to have a connection that deep with the doctor there has to be some organic element. I think it gives the Tardis more character- well as much character as a police box can have :PP

My main issue with the screwdriver is not that it changes colour as I know it has done that before my issue is that the green looked quite sickly, if it was a bright fluorescent green then that would have been ok.

Also I personally feel that the look they are going for in the console is a little to silly (i know saying something in doctor who is to silly is in itself silly but i stand by it)

Basically i dont see why they are making it into a "kids show" doctor who has always had a following in all age groups, I watched it in my teens and my mother watched it when she was younger. I am only 19 so I am the "younger demographic" it seems to me that they are not aiming it at young adults but at children, tweens etc

I don't think they're making it into more of a kids show than it was... After all, the head writer IS Steven Moffat - the guy who bought us what were probably the most 'adult' Doctor Who episodes of old new who. Not to mention that Moffat constantly talking about how he likes 'scary' and 'creepy' Doctor Who because that's what he remembers it being when he was a kid. In fact, I think we'll probably see more subtle and complex storylines now that Moffat's in charge, which hints to me that they're aiming at an older demographic.

Well they probably won't get that chance 'till series 6 - because the vast majority of this series has already been filmed XD

actually they change alot of things in editing whilst the series is runnign based on focus groups and the general publics opinion. thats why you get deleted scenes and whatnot, like they may have had the doctor do that funky stop time zoom around looking thing in every episode but they may edit it out of every episode if everyone hates it (which they do)
