Does anyone here like Yu-Gi-Oh? It's been given a bad wrap because the Anime was so childish and terrible. It's impossible to take an anime like that seriously, where it isn't comedic and serious criminals are expected to win battles through a card game.
The manga is actually very dark and gruesome. Yugi, an innocent little school kid who's just hit puberty, finishes a puzzle which is actually an ancient Egyptian artefact, and is possessed by the spirit of a pharaoh (hence Yu-Gi-Oh (Yugi + Pharaoh). Yugi is unpopular at school and is seen as an easy target, but when he is pushed too far the spirit, who needs to protect the body it is trapped in so as to save itself, takes control and fights off the bullies.
Eventually Yugi finds himself in more serious situations due to his only living relative and Grandpa obtaining a rare card which the son of a huge toy company, Kiba, wishes to own. After refusing Kiba's offers, Yugi's grandpa is kidnapped and tormented and has his card stolen. Yugi begins a real journey encountering criminals and all sorts of real life dangers, unlike the kiddy card game players seen in the Anime, and whenever he gets in real danger instead of winning through a card game, the pharaoh spirit takes over and uses his wit to convince the criminals that they want to play a game with him.
The "games" are much like the kind of puzzles you observe in the SAW movies, very messed up challenges where losing means death. These are all kinds of creepy and original creations like filling rooms with gas or oil and burning people alive or playing air hockey on a BBQ where a bomb is set on a block of ice. The pharaoh always has some sort of back up plan and teaches bad people good lessons with the most screwed up methods you'll never think of.
Not to mention there is a pervert baby and all sorts of crazy Japanese comedy which isn't considered politically correct over in the Western world, hence why the Anime was censored and made into a piece of crap.
